Stupidity is a lack of intelligence whereas ignorance is a lack of knowledge. I'm just curious - why do people tend to confuse the two and use them interchangeably?
Do they honestly not realize the difference or do they simply use it to bash their opponent in argument?

People don't realized this because they are either stupid or ignorant. It's the same people that assume high IQ means they know a lot.

Because people are either too stupid to understand the difference or are ignorant of the differences.
In terms of evaluating someone, it is difficult to determine if someone is incorrect due to stupidity or ignorance.
For example, if I made the claim 1+1 =3, am I being stupid, or just displaying mathematical ignorance?
