It could be that your catalytic converter's matrix has broken up and is blocking the exhaust system, causing increased back-pressure on the engine.
If this is the case, you'll need a new catalytic converter, plus probably a new exhaust downstream of the cat (to remove the blockage).
The breakage of the cat's matrix is usually caused by unburnt fuel reaching it, so get the engine serviced (or tuned) too, to make sure you fix the root cause and not just the symptoms.

On all fuel injected cars there is an idle speed control valve that allows the engine in tick over with out the inlet valve opening. The rubber pipes that run from the air cleaner to this valve are susceptible to cracking over time thus allowing more air into fuel injection system.
Check all the rubber pipes to see if they are still in place and not cracked.

Sounds like the throttle valve is dirty or stuck because of gunk.
