Two reasons. One rational, the other political.

The rational reason. We don't want what happened in Germany after World War One to happen again in Iraq. After Germany was defeated back then, the US and the allies just upped and left. Then Germany was left a social and economic wasteland where any tyrant could come in and pick up the pieces.. and the National Socialist party did exactly that. So there is at least a small interest in rebuilding a country after we have decimated it going after Saddam Hussein.

The political reason. What happened in Germany after WWI is going to happen in Iraq. Whether we pull out 5 years from now or 50 years from now, it is going to happen. This is 1500 years of extreme religious monotheistic belief we are fighting against. Its not going to vanish simply because we planted a flag on a hilltop. The politicians know this - both the Republicans and the Democrats. So the only thing they can do is keep the blame away from their political party for what happens next. They're keeping the troops over there simply because its the only way they can escape blame and keep their jobs.

They will come home within the next two years. I know it sounds long but until the Iraqi's get back on their feet with a new constitution their will be civil war internally. This happens in all nations that go through a transition from a dictatorship to democracy! The US government will continue to stay in Iraq until the people can take control away from these extremist bastards! Reminds me of a bunch of hippies without a heart. Very controlling AND with guns! Scary!

We were, and are not now, in a war against Sadam Hussein. It is a war against Islamic Fascist bent on terrorizing the world into submission.

I don't know if you truly lack reasoning capabilities or if you are just an innocent victim of socialistic doctrines...oh, they are the same, sorry.

Get a grip.

Get a life.

Get a mind.

Start thinking for yourself.

The same reason "we" started it. For control over an area stratigicly valuable that has a large supply of the natural resourse that the world runs on. It's all about imperialism.

Pshaw, silly Becky... It's not a war, it's now a police action.

Oh wait - last time that phrase was used, it was bad political ju-ju. Now we are working on helping them help themselves. Or some such crap. We just don't own the oil rigs over there yet, and the big companies making billions of $$$ don't want the gravy train to end yet.

Well, as much as I'd like to get out of the war, there is one thing to remember. As a man of honor, it is important that once one commits to something, they go all the way with it. No half-*** measures. We went into the war thinking it would be easy. We have now realized that was not to be the case. But just because something isn't easy, doesn't mean we can't run away from it. We must see this to its end.

Because Dick Cheney is unhinged and George Bush is incapable of admitting a mistake. Besides, all the things critics said before the war would happen have happened - an insurgency, a civil war, and a resurgent Iran to name a few. All of which have made matters much much worse than they were before.

those days, the 1st branch to start a conflict are U.S. military planes, or the many times happening USAF. the 1st to fairly combat on the floor are the Marines, in spite of the undeniable fact that, there are various cases the army gets in on the invasion besides. the great pink a million on D-Day as an occasion.

Because the new government can not at the moment stand on it's own, due to the insurgency of other countries. Once their forces are training adequately to step up and take over (more and more this last year) then we need to be there to provide them with the protection need for them to do so! Where have you been? Pay attention!
