the arena was made ice to begin with and then they have these like wooden(basketball floor thingies) that are like sqaurish that they put down over the ice. when the stars play they pick the wood up and when the mavs play they put the wood down

In any arena that's used for hockey plus anything else, the ice will be on the bottom. For any event other than a hockey game, they just put whatever surface they need on top of the ice. So it's just like crispymon said ... when there's a basketball game on, the floor sits on top of the ice. They just take up the floor to change from basketball to hockey, and lay the floor back down again for the next basketball game.

the ice is only 3/4 inch to an inch thick and then concreat underneath.....they just put in the boards then the freezer thing then put the ice down some way some how ...

I think they melt the ice and replace it with basketball floor bceause that's how you get the lines on the ice.
