A small group of former liberals who became disenchanted with the increasingly socialist agenda of the Democrat Party and liberalism became neo (new) conservatives. The movement started back in the 1940's. There are only a few true neo-cons. It's the classic mark of a moron to overuse the word because they don't understand the meaning.

Just read some of the answers you're going to get if you want to really understand how few of them know what one is. You can teach a parrot or an ape to mimic and mouth words. That doesn't mean the beast knows what it's doing. Most of them can't string three sentences together to form a coherent paragraph.

Neo con was a word invented by traditional conservatives to distinguish true conservatives, from the fundie Christianists who jumped on the conservative bandwagon during or after the Reagan era. Since neocons can't speak intelligent English, they must have to make up words, like demorats. Neocons are morons who overuse the term liberal. Neocons try to insult liberals and think they can speak for or define them. Just look at all the questions here that ask why do liberals hate Bush, America, want to cut and run ad naeuseum. Neocons have been trying to insult liberals so long that when the tables are turned they are insulted. It's pretty bad that they now consider their own term for themselves an insult.

Neoconservatism is a political movement, mainly in the United States and Canada, which is generally held to have emerged in the 1960s, coalesced in the 1970s, and has had a significant presence in the administration of George W. Bush.

The prefix neo- refers to two ways in which neoconservatism was new. First, many of the movement's founders, originally liberals, Democrats or from socialist backgrounds, were new to conservatism. Also, neoconservatism was a comparatively recent strain of conservative socio-political thought. It derived from a variety of intellectual roots in the decades following World War II, including literary criticism and the social sciences.

Irving Kristol, Norman Podhoretz and others described themselves as neoconservatives during the Cold War. In general, however, the movement's critics use the term more often than supporters. In fact, some people described as "neocons" today say that neoconservatism no longer exists as an identifiable movement.

Many associate neoconservatism with periodicals such as Commentary and The Weekly Standard, along with the foreign policy initiatives of think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and the Project for the New American Century (PNAC). Neoconservative journalists, pundits, policy analysts, and politicians, often dubbed "neocons" by supporters and critics alike, have been credited with (or blamed for) their influence on U.S. foreign policy, especially under the administration of George W. Bush.

As I said in a previous answer, it is a buzzword, used more to impress than explain anything. As explained by David Horowitz: "Neo-conservatism is a term almost exclusively used by the enemies of America's liberation of Iraq. There is no "neo-conservative" movement in the United States. When there was one, it was made up of former Democrats who embraced the welfare state but supported Ronald Reagan's Cold War policies against the Soviet bloc. Today neo-conservatism identifies those who believe in an aggressive policy against radical Islam and the global terrorists."

People who want to jump on the anti-war bandwagon use it before knowing about it.

Neoconservatism is a political movement, basically set in the United States and Canada. It was said to emerge in the 1960s. Neocons have a significant presence in the Bush administration.

Many of the movement' founders, originally liberals, democrats or socialist backgrounds, were new to conservatism.

According the founder of neoconservatism, Irving Kristol, there are three basic pillars of Neoconservatism.
1. Ecnomics- Cutting tax rates in order to stimulate steady, wide-spread economic growth and acceptance of the necessity of the risks inherent in that growth, such as budget deficits, as well as the potential benefits, such as budget surplusses.
2. Domestic Affairs: Preferring strong government but not intrusive government, slight acceptance of the welfare state, adherence to social conservatism, and disapproval of counterculture
3. Foreign Policy: Patriotism is a necessity, world government is a terrible idea, the ability to distinguish friend from foe, protecting national interest both at home and abroad, and the necessity of a strong military.

To make a long story short their basically a liberal in a republican suit.

It now is used as a derogatory term to describe anyone who is NOT opposed to the war the US is currently fighting. There are many liberals in the new neo-con camp.

It used to mean Liberals who turned Republican.

The regular mainstream political parties just don't have all the right views for some people, so they make their own party. Also can be read as: all the cool kids won't let me in their club, so I'll make my own club, and they can't come in.

Someone just wants to be seen as a little different. It's the new buzzword to say that they are morally superior to anyone in the old boring regular donkey-n-elephant show.
