I have a Panasonic ED (480p) TV I was going to upgrade to a HD (720p/1080i/p) cable package from DirecTV how much will the picture quality improve? Will it at least match the quality of a DVD (480p)?

HD content should excellent. Your unit will take the 720p/1080i signal and down convert it to 480p.

I'm sorry you were duped into buying an EDTV. Can you return it?

just looking at the numbers you know that 720 or 1080 > 480. And yes when you're going digital it really does make a difference!

Directv is dropping off those analog/EDTV signals in favor of HDTV, because HD channels even look better on an EDTV than the old analog stuff!

Now... DVDs are another subject! they are 480... that's it. But with a good set or a good line doubling player they look pretty good. Not directv quality ... but "pretty good".

And then came Blu-ray! DVDs are last millennium's toy! in a couple years everyone will be discarding DVDs and DVD players in favor of the real HD qualiuty on Blu-Ray! And your old EDTV won't keep up!
