Below is an exerpt from some of the info at the above site. Check it out, it is full of great info.

Lifespan and diet

Normally betta fish live to be 2-5 years old, but some betta fishes live to be nearly 8 years old. However, when purchasing from a pet store, it is not always possible to know how old the fish is when you take it home. Male bettas living in laboratories with large individual tanks and daily exercise have lived 10 years or longer.

Carnivorous, the betta feeds on zooplankton and mosquito and other insect larvae. Domesticated bettas will feed on bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Betta pellets are typically a combination of mashed shrimp meal, bloodworms, and various vitamins to enhance color and longevity. For variety and fiber, bettas may also be fed finely chopped vegetables high in protein such as soybeans, green beans, broccoli, corn, or carrots.

Most bettas only live about 2-3 years if that long due to poor care and being kept in small bowls. Some can live longer with better care. However, even with good care some die suddenly and unexpectedly for no apparent reason at about 3 years old. Bettas probably have a potential life span of about 10 years with excellent care in perfect conditions.Sadly, many of us do not have the strength, talent, time, money, or scientific know how to successfully maintain our bettas in large 5-10-gallon tanks; so our dear betta friends break our hearts leaving us earlier than we want.

I have never heard of a record. When properly cared for they will live 4-6 years normally. Mine usually live 5-6 years, with a few that exceded 7, and one that lived to be 10. But that would be a very rare thing.

I did come across an author of betta book stating he has kept one who live as long as 7 years.
Sorry I can't recalled where and who that author was.

Who can trell for sure how old they get. I have had them routinely live to 5 years and have had several dozen exceed 7 years. I have never heard of anyone trying to determine a record though.

Let's start our own record, I had one for three years. It had survived the cat tipping his tank over, about three hours on the soggy carpet, then he was dumped out in my car durring a move. Red was a pretty hearty fish!
