Sea salt works best....everyone from the ancient, Mosaic-era Hebrews to the modern Wiccans to the Sumo Wrestlers agree on this one. o_O Odd, isn't it?
But yeah, apparently almost *every* culture of faith on the planet has some purifying use for salt, and most agree that sea salt dried up from the ocean's waters is the best for the purpose.

potassium cyanide works well, so does lead chromate, or mercury methylchloride....
