I want to buy a laptop/notebook but I really do not want to spend more than $600 on one at this time. I mostly just use the computer for AOL and a photo program (for my digital camera)... No games or anything like that. For my price range, I've been looking at Everex (@ walmart), Compaq, Toshiba, and Acer. Which one would you all recommend?

If I were you I would go with the Compaq or vToshiba -- they are both very good ---- there is one thing that I suggest___ get the largest hard drive that you can afford ... photos and stream video in your digi-camera take a lot of space on the hard drive as well as all the editing that makes photos more fun--- the other thing would be to put pic's on the disc and not clutter a small H-drive -- there are some re-furbished laptops that are reasonably priced and you could use an external H-drive to lower the cost and expand memory....

Go used. You can get a top of the line used machine from eBay or Craigslist for $600, rather than a bare bones laptop from a retailer that will lose half it's value when you take it home from the store. Much like cars, laptops depreciate drastically in the first year of ownership. Capitalize on that by buying a year old laptop, and let the original owner take the huge hit instead of you. Right now there are IBM / Lenovo Thinkpad T40 machines on craigslist for under $600.
