I think it allows people to 'let off' steam, as long as someone else is willing to read it.....like now...... :)
Disadvantages hinge around the improper use of ventilating that energy or frustration - occasionally you get such an uncontrolled level of baloney, that it sort of turns you off!!
Middle of the way answer? The internet is a powerful tool - in the wrong hands, well, it is heavy going.

There are too many to list explicitly, but in general some of the advantages have to do with the ability to research, of being able to do certain things without leaving the house (such as online banking), and to communicate across distances at a fractional cost.
The disadvantages can mostly be atoned to the anonimity factor (which works also as an advantage), and the fact that a lot of people associate the Internet with hacking opens up a pandora's box. Then there are certain things simply can not be done without real world interaction of some sort (such as fueling up a car, for example).

Here's a disadvantage: Anyone can post anything on the Internet, whether it is accurate or not. Sometimes people who answer Yahoo Answer questions may not know what they are talking about.
