It depens on whether or not you have automatic or manual locking hubs. I own a 1996 Geo Tracker 4X4, which is essentially the same vehicle with different badging.
If you have manual-locking hubs, the center of each front wheel will have a circlular hub which you can turn from "Free" to "Lock" with a 90-degree turn. Then, get back in, pull the 4-Wheel Drive lever up to 4-Hi, and start driving again. To disengage, you need to shift the 4-Wheel Drive lever from 4-Hi to 2-Hi (this can be done at speeds below 45 miles per hour), and you're back in 2-Wheel Drive. For better mileage, pull over and unlock the hubs.
If you have automatic-locking hubs, the center of each front wheel will be flat, with no place to grip it. In this case, you generally need to stop the vehicle, pull the 4-Wheel Drive lever up to 4-Hi, then start driving again. To disengage, you have to stop, put it back in 2-Hi, then reverse at least ten feet, after which you can drive again.
To put it in 4-Lo, you have to stop the vehicle, put the Shifter in Neutral (Manual and Automatic) while keeping your foot on the brake (and or clutch), shift the 4-Wheel Drive lever from 4-Hi to Neutral to 4-Lo (it should go left, up, then right), put the vehicle back in First gear (manual or automatic). Disengaging requires the same steps - Stop the car, put it the transmission in Neutral while keeping your foot on the brake and/or clutch, and shift the 4-Wheel Drive lever from 4-Lo to Neutral to 4-Hi.
Note - Never use anything other than First or Second gear for 4-Lo, whether it's an automatic or manual transmission (Automatic, it may be L instead of 1 and 2). It will destroy your car to do otherwise.
Look on the driver's side sunvisor for exact instructions for both cases, as well as a push-button 4-Wheel Drive if that's what you have.
As for the N/AT/P button, I don't know what that is. I must have a slightly more basic model. If you have an owner's manual, look for it in the index.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.
