Hugs to you! It's so hard. My son has reflux too. I breastfeed and even did an elimination diet. I found cutting out cow's milk and caffeine really helped, but he still needs his Zantac. I've tried chiropractic work too, which didn't help him. If you are nursing, you can try an elimination diet. I think www.kellymom.com has a good post about it there. It will take about 2 weeks before elimination works.

1. Keep him upright for 20-30 minutes after each feeding
2. Burp him often
3. If you are giving him formula, add rice cereal. An article I read said that you can add up to 1 tablespoon for every 2 ounces of formula, personally I use 1 teaspoon per 2 ounces (Many ppl will tell you to NEVER add rice cereal to formula, and while this is true for most cases, dealing with the acid reflux is a separate issue)
4. If it does not improve, ask to switch to a different medication. My baby is on Zantac
5. If you use formula, try switching types - we ended up using Similac Alimentum, which is crazy expensive, but the baby is not in constant pain anymore so it is worth it.
Keep an eye on his weight gain - if he is spitting up so much that he is not gaining enough weight, you will need to take more serious measures.
My doctor said that acid reflux peaks between 3-6 months, so you know that there is an end in sight. Good luck!

Hi,
The food that you swallow travels down your throat and is pushed by contractions of the muscular esophagus. In the area where the esophagus joins the stomach a valve-like mechanism, known as lower esophageal sphincter (LES), is located. The closure of this muscle prevents stomach acid from backing up, or refluxing, into the esophagus. LES malfunction is the first factor that causes and contributes to gastro-esophageal reflux disease. In a healthy individual, the LES relaxes only when food passes from the esophagus into the stomach. After the food passes into the stomach, the valve shuts off, keeping the stomach content and acid inside. However, when the LES is weak and doesn't close properly, acid can splash up into your throat causing painful burning sensation, called heartburn.
A good natural method to cure your acid reflux can be found on this site http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=568
Hope it helps.

Don't lay him down flat. Get one of those wedge pillows and put it under the crib mattress to raise it up. If he is still in a bassinet put a rolled towel under the mattress. My son had this and he did a lot better with the wedge. He also loved sitting in his swing in the kitchen or living room where ever I was working. Laying down flat causes the acid to rise back into their throat.

Talk to your pediatrician! My daughter had terrible reflux up until she was six months old...we had to keep her upright at all times, I pumped all her milk, bottled it and thickened her feed with a teaspoon of cereal per ounce of milk...
It'll get better once he starts solids and can sit up...
Hang in there!

Do you use fromula or breast milk? They make a special formula for reflux, it is heavier and stays down better! Good luck! You can get it in Similac or enfamil!
