Yes it alters the PH of the soil and in a small area such as a pot plant you will eventually kill it.

No, the only thing that you might do is alter the pH level. It would take a lot of ash (pounds) to make any meaningful change.

If smoking gives you cancer what do you think it will do to your plant? Of course it will die over time. Get a nice looking ash tray and ash in there! Best of Luck!
