If a striker wants to stand in front of the goal, then someone should play defense! They say its not fair if a player can just stand back and wait for the ball to score. well play defense.

The off-sides rule in soccer is just as valid as the rule in hockey or American football. The idea is to make a team earn it's offensive positioning. Following your reasoning (just play defense) would make it appropriate for football teams to just have their receivers stand by the goal line, waiting for a pass. No speed or route running talents needed - just be the biggest, tallest guy there.

I see your point but I don't know what it would do for the game - they got rid of the two-line-pass rule in hockey, what good did that do?

I do think though that they could adjust the rule - maybe make it more like offsides in hockey - instead of a completely linear rule, why not have it be, if the ball or a defender is in the box, then you can be in the box? Alternatively you could have a 3-second rule in the little box but I think that the refs have enough to watch already.

I coach in a U12 girls youth league in the US and we have no offsides rule. I do park forwards in the box but typically there is a sweep behind them. Where offsides comes up is on a breakaway - the midfielder boots the ball into the zone, the forward darts toward the net and tries to control the ball and get a quick shot off. Often in this instance the forward will race past the defender before the ball passes her. And in many instances I run 2-3 forwards into the box after that booted ball - kind of like a Frederick II cavalry charge. I don't see the point of disallowing the eventual goal on this. I think that it is precisely this application of the offsides rule that forces teams to try to go up the side and then center to try to set up a goal. That said I don't think changing the rule would create high scoring games - the teams would just have to play defense.

As for the goalie above - you're not allowed to screen the goalie, either. What they're doing is illegal. Also you're the goalie - if your defender gets physical to protect you, she won't get a yellow card. Someone tries that against my girls, they knock her on her fanny.

There would have to be a rule against off-sides or teams would throw like 3 players in front of the net and just wait for the ball to get there. It keeps the game fair and moving.

No, the rule is far from stupid. There is too much of an advantage when a player is way ahead of the defense, and something like that would make football a high-scoring game. This would just about ruin football.

And also, it's not like there are SO many rules in football that offsides is just another annoying one. Unlike must American sports, football has relatively few penalties and the such.

It does make sense because it would allow for more defensive play around the goal area, BUT I would rather have it. It allows for hard competition and it makes the goals worthwhile and meaningful towards the outcome of the game. It requires the players to play at their best and to play as a team, instead of taking the easy way into a victory.

It is a very good rule. I play goalie on a women's league indoors and there is no off sides. I hate it because there is always someone from the other team standing in the box trying to block me from stopping the ball from going in. I think anyone that thinks it is stupid to have it doesn't understand the game.

Only people who have no compehension of the greatest, most beautiful game would disagree that the offside rule is necessary to provide a balance of attacking and defensive play.

P.S, Ronaldo is a diver and a cheat, the sooner he buggers off to Real Madrid the better - even though he's potentially one of the great players of recent times - we can do with his antics.

No because then there would always be someone standing up near the goal. The defenders need to do more then just pay attention to that one asshole. There are a limited number of players on the field and more then that just one needs to be defended. If you think its a stupid rule you need to go learn how to play soccer better

No, its a perfect rule and it creates awesome goals.

Offsides in the NFL is stupid, the wide receiver should be allowed to stand in the touchdown and wait for the QB to snap the ball and then just throw it to him.

Do you understand now?

The offside rule actually helps offense because then a team does not have to keep half its players in front of goal always, but can actually move upfield and build attacks.
