Politicians should defiantly have a limit on pay. They look out for their self most of the time and lobbyists make sure they never have a bad lunch. They should all get payed around the 40-50k range depending on how long they have served. Honestly what does a millionaire know about poverty.

The pay doesn't gurarantee the politician will relate better to the people. It is important for the politician to to be knowledeable of the issues that concern his/her constituency. The politician should be representative of his/her community. It wouldn't be a bad idea if we, citizens, could collectively "dock" or even "fire" politicians who disappoint us.

It wouldn't make any difference. Their main sources of income are not the pay they get as politicians. If you look at what financial interests they will admit to, you will see that they have a lot more available to them than they declare as income.
You have a good point though. Reagan made the comment once when he went off his script that the average individual income was around $250,000/year.
Jimmy Carter would go and spend a day with an ordinary family (you could submit your name if you wanted to be in the drawing), have supper with them and see what they wanted to talk about. Only President to do that sort of thing. That's why that clown O'Reilley or whatever his name is calls him a socialist.

If you limit the pay a politician can receive, then the only people who will be able to afford to be in office are people who can afford not to get paid - namely, wealthy people. So how does that result in politicians who can "relate better to the people."
Rather, I suggest spending your effort on getting more people to participate in the process. When politicians know the people are watching their every move, believe me, they'll start "relating better" real quick.

If it were possible, all pay for congress and the president should be eliminated, that way it would be statesmen and not politicians that made laws for the country. They would serve the people not their own self interest. But that dream is not ever going to be for real. We are stuck with crooks and incompetents just seeking power, and cash.

No,the pay for a politician is really not that great the president only makes about 250,000 dollars a year.Their desire to hold office is a community service but most politicians get taken in by the power they have.It will take a educated person to hold office. But the persons which are the most qualified would never serve.

First of all most of the politicians are "well healed" anyway. Second they must maintain two residences, one at their regular home and one in the Washington area. Same in your state capital. They make the decision what they are paid and so it isn't likely you will get them to cut their own salaries.

I absolutely, positively, do NOT want to relate to my President. He has to be exceptional and way better and smarter than I am. I have said this before, I do not want my next door neighbor running for President. If you limit pay, you will probably get less worthy people in there...just like any other job.
