As long as you live in THEIR house and they pay for YOUR food and shelter aka house and probably clothes, etc. - yes, they have that right, but I'm not a cop or a lawyer, just a parent. So if some state thinks differently - I'd be interested to know. For now - State of Kansas would agree with me. Good luck with that one!

Your parents can do just about anything they see fit in terms of raising you into a proper adult. You may have bought the cell phone but your parents have the right as your legal guardians to say whether or not you can keep it. When you are 18, then legally you would be able to expect return of the property.
Same goes for just about anything - you are a minor, in their care, living under their roof --- so it's their rules.
I get the feeling the cell phone was taken as punishment, and your parents are within their parental rights to take away the prvilege of using a cell phone even if you pay for it. If they are planning on keeping it, then they must return it upon your reaching the age of majority because it is your property.

Where did you get the money for the phone? Was it supposed to be used for some other purpose? Why didn't they want you to have the phone? Were you communicating with someone they don't like? Did you have one before that they took away? Did you get bad grades or do something wrong and they took away other things as well? I'm sure they will give it back. Just pay rent, food, clothes, utilities and insurance on the car they bought and let you drive. Having a mobile phone is a privilege, not a right.

Unfortunately, yes.
As a parent, I never have taken away anything that belongs to my son, whether it was a gift or if he bought it.
I just don't think it's right. He is not a second-class citizen just because he is a child. (He's 12.) Of course, I have been blessed with a wonderful child who is respectful and has common sense.

As long as you are a minor (under 18) yes, they can. You are not held liable for contracts, your parents are. They can take anything they deem necessary to protect themselves from your financial obligations.

Unfortunately they can. Basically, everything you own they can take...Unless its a car with a title and valid registration...thats one of the few exceptions....Unless of course you're over the age of 18, then no.

When you live in their house you follow their rules.
You need to teach them a lesson. As soon as you turn 18 move out, get your own place, pay all your own bills and they can't do a darn thing about it.

Well, my guess is that you hardly use your money to pay for food, shelter, transportation or utilities. I am sure they will give you back your cell phone when you are ready to pay for everything else.
