That all depends on what your intent is for the laptop. General browsing. almost anything that is out there right now will satisfy your needs.
Gaming.. Look for the fastest processor(s) and the largest Hard drive.

Many people swear by Dell. Many swear AT Dell. I don't like their tech support. HP is pretty solid. Sony is WAY overpriced. COMPAQ is just another HP product. That sums it up. By the cheapest you can get for the power you want.
