My son is 9. He's in a wheelchair. He has Cerebral Palsy. He's quiet when I have him out. It's not like he's screaming and stuff. But, people are so F*UCKING rude and stare at him because he's in a wheelchair!!! It's pisses me off so bad!! Why are people so inconciderate? He's just a little boy and has been through so much more than a lot of people will EVER go through!! He can't do things like other little kids.... he can't even PLAY!! Maybe they should say HI to him instead of staring!! People can be such ASSH*LES!!

I don't say anything to the people who stare, it just makes me mad. I usually just look back at them and smile.... if they can pull their eyes away from my son. I just don't understand why people are so RUDE!!

Thank you to the two people who answered my question... I thought there would be more answers... I guess people were just scared to answer... I just don't understand... He's just a little kid!!! When he was a baby you couldn't tell anything was wrong with him. People would talk to him and stuff. But, now they just stare. One day I was carrying my son, and I heard a little girl in the store ask her mom in a really snotty voice "Why don't he just WALK?!!" OMG!!! I wanted to slap her!! But again, thank you for answering!!

I totally simpathize with you. My 3 year old daughter is severely disabled. People stare a lot and luckily she doesn't seem to notice, at least not yet. I usually just ignore them. What REALLY gets me is when they get nasty and say something stupid like, "why are you giving her a bottle? she should have a sippee". Because she just can't, mind your own business! is what I think but am usually polite. I think its because she doesn't look disabled people respond that way. Anyway, maybe you should try responding to their stares with a very friendly "hello" and introduce your child, start a friendly conversation, pretend like you thought they were interested in a conversation. If you let yourself get too angry its going to be more negative on your son and he's going to respond with hurt and notice the stares as much as you do.

My 2 year old little boy has cerebral palsy, we don't have a wheelchair for him yet but at one point he had high tone and people would give him dirty looks and whisper to the person next to them. I understand what you are talking about. There was one time when I snapped and i asked the person staring if they had a problem and they just walk away. I'm sorry but instead of being ignorant I would rather have someone ask me. My son ha sthe mentality of a newborn. he smiles a lot and loves to be aorund people. God bless your child.

Sometimes when people stare maybe they are curious and not being rude. Maybe they don't quite know how to approach you or your son. Hang a little sign on his chair that says "Here's looking at you kid" or "Hello World" and maybe this will start a dialog with the people that you two encounter when you are out and about. My sis-in-law had chemotherapy which caused her to go bald. Many people would stare when we were out and finally she started responding to their stares by speaking to them and wishing them a nice day. She discovered that most people were not staring out of rudeness, just genuine curiosity.
