does anyone know how you can find out whether an e-book is good?

Depending on the site from which you're downloading the book, they usually offer "sneak peaks" ala sample chapters. If they don't, there are probably ebook reviewers out there somewhere. If the author's name and email are available, email him/her for sample chapters.
