It is bad for a newborn to be around a toddler who has recently been vaccinated with any live cell vaccine.

However millions of children live with older siblings and nobody ever thinks twice.

It's not an ideal situation, but you can't protect a child from everything. A newborn isn't going to have a complete line of shots, and neither does a 3-year-old, even if he's up to date on shots. Vaccines are given all the way through the teen years; so no younger child will be perfectly protected. Obviously, if the older child has a major illness, you should keep them separated. Otherwise, there's no real need to keep them apart.

Only if the toddler gets sick.

Vaccine's don't kill viruses. They make you more immune to them. A toddler that touches a surface with a virus on it will carry the virus for a short time whether they have the vaccine or not. A child without the shots will be more likely to get sick. A sick child will carry the virus longer.

The more important part is to get the infant vaccinated. That's the best protection.

I'm not a doctor or anything... that's just my 2 cents.

As long as the 3 yr old isn't carrying a virus I think that it would be okay. Ideally the 3yr old should be up to date on the shots though.

I doubt it. Even thought the three year old doesn't have his/her shots chances are the people that child IS around [adults and other children] have had their shots. This would mean the chance they even came across the diseases slim to nil. I'd still be cautious though and if you're really worried just wait until the newborn has his/her shots. Best of Luck!

I'd be more worried about my newborn being around a vaccinated kid, not an unvaccinated one.
