The Subaru Forester has excellent crash test ratings and has the best AWD system. They are comfortable and handle very well. Follow the maintenance schedule at it will last a long time. I have seen Foresters with over 250,000 miles and going strong. It a nut shell they are the best in class, for handling, reliability, fuel economy, great AWD and especially safety. Test drive different makes and I now you will love the Forester. The Honda CRV is nice too but I prefer a Forester.

We have a subaru forester 1999 and love it. So we have gone out and purchased a 2007 forester and it is great. These cars are rated very high by consumer reports. The gas mileage is really good. The car is highly realiable. There is plenty of room inside the forester.

The Subaru Forester is a reliable vehicle with good gas mileage and a lot of interior room. Even though it's classified as a small Sport Utility Vehicle, it's really just a tallish Station Wagon and has no real off-road capability. There's no true 4-Wheel Drive system, just All-Wheel Drive, and the ground clearance is low. Don't plan on taking on anything worse than a dirt road or a snow-covered driveway. There's also a performance version, called the Turbo XT, with a turbocharged engine and performance addons such as hood scoop, rear roof spoiler, and aerodynamic front bumper.
If you're interested in this type of vehicle, consider these similarly priced and similarly styled All-Wheel Drive vehicles:
Ford Freestyle - Reliable, though not quite as reliable as the Forester; slightly larger than Forester, more room.
Mitsubishi Outlander - Forester's main competitor. Very close in size, price, reliability, and performance, though it has more aggressive styling and comes with a better warranty.
Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon - More luxurious than Forester, slightly better off-road (though still not as good as a small SUV). Longer, more interior room, better performance, similar gas mileage, very reliable. Holds its value better than Forester, but is also a little more expensive.
In my opinion, go for the Forester or the Outlander if you don't plan to go off-road at all, go for the Freestyle if you like a roomy interior and need to haul lots of junk. If you want a Subaru above all else, go for the Legacy Outback if you can afford it instead of the Forester.
I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

We own a 2005 Forester Turbo with over 66,000 miles on it now. We've had zero problems with it - nothing, nada. It's been perfect.
We bought it because it was the top rated small SUV by Consumer Reports 3 years in a row. It does just about everything perfectly. It's quick, handles very well, is reasonably economical for an AWD wagon, looks very nice, has adequate room and lots of amenities like heated seats, mirrors, windshield, storage compartments everywhere.
Our only complaints have been an overly complicated windshield wiper control and some wind noise at speeds above 75. I highly recommend them...

GREAT!!! I have a 1999 Forester with 265,000 miles on it with no major problems. I love it, but as others pointed out, go and try the other Subaru models and see which one you fall in love with. Im currently in the market for an Outback.
Good luck.

ME AND MY HUSBAND OWN A 2006 SUBARU LEGACY AND IN MY OPINION YOU CAN'T GO WRONG BUYING A AWD VEHICLE. I'VE HEARD REALLY HIGH REMARKS ABOUT ALL SUBARU'S SO GO TEST DRIVE ONE AND THEN MAKE A SMART DECISION AND OWN ONE. AND AS FAR AS ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DOWN FOREIGN CARS WHAT AMERICAN MADE CAR HAS A 10 YEAR 100,000 MILE FACTORY WARRANTY'S? WELL LET'S SEE THAT WOULD BE A SUBARU.

The Forester is top rated in its class by anyone who rates cars. I drove it and found that the short wheelbase gave it too choppy a ride for my taste and I ended up (happily) buying an Outback wagon.
