The principle of Archimedes.
The story goes that the king was sure his goldsmith had stiffed him with the making of a crown. He gave the goldsmith 1kg of gold and got a 1kg crown, but was sure the goldsmith had kept part of the gold. The king commissioned Archimedes to solve the problem, but no matter how hard Archimedes thought, he could not figure it out. Given up on finding the solution, Archimedes decided to relax in a hot tub. As he got into the tu, he notices some of the water toppled over the rim of the tub. Suddenly he realized the solution (yelling his famous "eureka" which means in geek: I have found it). He put 1 kg of gold in a tub and noticed the displacement of water and then placed the crown. The crown displaced less water, which meant the goldsmith had replaced some of the gold with another material. The goldsmith was executed.

Back to your question, The principle discovered by Archimedes, called the hydrostatic principle states that a body immersed in a fluid experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. the flat bottom of the boat displaces more water tha its weight, so the boat floats. If you made the boat narrower, eventually it would sink (given the same weight).

A steel bar dropped into water sinks, but a huge boat made of steel floats. Why? Most of the space in the boat is taken up by air. The air makes the boat less dense than water. Objects of lesser density float on liquids of greater density.

This is also why holes in the bottom of a boat cause it to sink: as air floods out of the boat and water rushes in, the overall density of the boat increases to become more dense than the surrounding water..

for this we need to consider the effective density of a boat.
the effective density will be (mass) / (effective volume)
here by saying effective volume, I mean to say that the volume covered by the material of boat (the material from which the boat is made, say steel,) + the volume enclosed by the boat (the volume of empty cabins etc.) + the volume of water that can be filled above it's deck (say, we fill some amount of water on the deck , which is not flowing away and is restricted by means of the side walls of the deck that usually prevents the incoming waves).
for a boat to float the above mentioned density should come out to be less than 1, which actually is the case for any boat to float.
actually the empty cabins and other hollows in the boat structure, increase it's effective volume.

Boats r hollow at the bottom n that will have the air pressure making it to float.

Boats float because the density of wood or iron- whatever they are made of- is reduced to less than that of water due to air.A boat is never made air tight cause if air was not allowed to flow in it then it would not float.Density is the factor responsible behind this floatation.a iron bar never floats in water -right - cause it does allow air to go through it and thus its density remains more than that of water and it sinks.

Because the weight of the boat is less than the weight of the displaced volume of water. Otherwise its a submarine.
