Melasma is usually treated by chemical peels, over-the-counter skin bleaches, keeping out of the sun, and, in serious cases, laser treatment. She can get any of these treatments if she wants... the biggie is keeping out of the sun.

If it was caused by her birth control (which it often is), she may want to switch to another method. If she wants to stay on the pill, she can try a lower-dose formulation or the mini-pill, which does not contain estrogen (estrogen is the culprit). Or she can try a non-hormonal contraceptive like an IUD or condoms.
