i'm not sure if I want to do the birthing classes, I was wondering how important and helpful you think they were for you.

I didn't take any, and my birth was fine.

HOWEVER prep is always great to have--birthing classes, talking with other mothers, etc. The more you know, the more prepared you will be for every situation.

Also, try a prenatal yoga class. It's amazing and they say that taking yoga during pregnancy actually helps make the birth easier.

If you are going to have an epidural or a c section and you know this in advance, I don't think classes would do any good. But if you are going to try to have a natural birth, I would definitely take a class. I had my first 2 kids in a hospital, and both were natural births, but I didn't take classes. They put me in a bed, hooked up machines to me and I was just stuck there until the baby was born. Birth is not supposed to be like that. My third baby was born in a birthing center. I was up walking around, used a birthing ball, the bathtub, etc. It was much better that time. I think birthing classes let you know that you don't have to be strapped down to a bed while the nurses and doctors stand around and wait. That is the worst way to labor. Find out from the classes what you can do during labor. I just didn't know any better from my first two and now it makes me angry to think about it. I would have been much better off with the first two if I would have known I didn't have to be strapped to a bed. The classes let you know your options and you won't feel like a prisoner in the hospital bed.

I took a birthing class b/c I thought I had to. I had never done this birthing thing and I assumed that they teach you skills "needed" to give birth

I didnt use any of the breathing techniques they taught us. However I had an epidural when I was 5cm dialated. So, if you are trying to go natural then maybe you would like to take the course and notify the teacher that you need extra skills in coping with pain b/c you want a natural birth

Dont get me wrong it still hurts if though you have an epidural. It wont hurt getting to 10 cm. But thats when they turn the epidural off so you can feel when you need to push.

Personally I think its a waste of $$$. A simple book on birthing techniques should be plenty

I'm pregnant and I'm taking the classes.

I plan to have an epidural, so I initially questioned whether it was even worth it for me to take the class. I then realized that the class is SO much more than the breathing - it also teaches you about giving birth. This way, you'll have a realistic expectation of what will happen in delivery.

I suspect the breathing exercises will be helpful before the epidural kicks in, or if there's some problem with getting one, too.

I am 21 years old and am 19 weeks pregnant with my first child. I wasnt going to take birthing classes but I decided that I am going to. My first class is March 1st. My doctor recommended birthing classes because he said it will be easier for the Mother. If you go into birth knowing what to expect then that will be easier. If you go into birth not knowing what to expect, and dont know how to deal with the pain then you will most likely breathe wrong (Panting), and that isnt good for the baby. You can also panic and not know what to expect afterwards.
If you have the details and know what to do it will be much better for you and your baby. If you want a easy birth, take the classes. Good Luck!

they are not overly important, this is my first baby and because it was a bit ofa shock i have made sure i've read up or everything and anything that could or will happen to me haha, because i'm a bit or a worrier!
i have been to the first 2 out of 5 classes now and although i know most of the stuff they are telling us i still find them great!! its great to hear stories and advice, from the midwifes as well as from other mums to be.
i really enjoy them and we also get a physiotherapy lesson as part of the class which teaches us breathing/relaxation techniques ect.
there is no harm in trying it out once or twice - you are not obliged to go back.
what i like is that when i read something ina book about child birth or pregnancy you cannot ask the book a question, and i usually forget to ask at my antenatal appts as they are so far apart, so its good to go everyweek and you can ask anything you want to know.
hope this helps.

When I was prego w/ my first child, I read EVERY website in the world, EVERY book ever written... you get the drift... At about 7 months into my pregnancy, I decided to start birthing classes. Talk about a waste of money and time! Everything you learn in birthing classes, you can learn from the many websites regarding pregnancy and birth. I ended up only going to 4 of like 10 classes. Oh, and as far as the "breathing techniques" go, they arent worth a crap! They can't teach you any new "breathing techniques" that you haven't already seen in a million movies.

The birthing classes scared me to death (I actually left at the end of the class telling my husband that I changed my mind...I didn't want a baby after all - of course it was too late and I had to go through with it.) What I learned in them was completely useless when it came time to actually do it (I don't know how anyone can remember the correct breathing techniques and what-not when they are in that much pain!)

I think its not a must because once you are in labor all the relaxation techniques they teach you just blank out. l know I completely forgot. But then again I had a sorry excuse for an anesthesian who didnt know how to put my epidural in right, ended up feeling everything! The second time around though was a wonderful experience. Your call though if you think that you will remember at the time go for it they teach you lots of good stuff. Congratulations!

i took one it was a complete waste of time to me i mean as long as you can breathe thru pain like if you got kicked in the stomach or someone cut your finger or you gave yourself a paper cut and you can breathe thru that you can make it thru labor til the 4 cm and get the epidural because you have no proof on how big your kid will be and it makes labor go faster since you can relax without the pain which can actually slow down labor so think about the worst cramps you have ever had and then think of how you got thru the cramping until you could take some advil its the same concept whether you focused on an image in your mind or just close your eyes and tune everything out its your call but i wouldnt waste your time on a class
