I have been asked by my family to write my life story so it can pass down to my children and grandchildren. There is so much in my life that they are not aware of. I cannot seem to know how to start this project. Thank you.

Start with an outline of the topics/times of your life that were signaficant to you. Then you can list under each topic the things you want to write about. Now you at least have an outline and the stories should be easier to write down. You don't have to write your stories in time order. You can put it all in order once you're done. Once you start writing, the words should flow. Good luck.

Good for you! I am sure they willl appreciate it when it's done something to keep in the family always............I would agree that you don't have to begin at the beginning.....besides your story doesn't begin at your birth really ........it began when your parents met....who in turn had their story begin when their parents met..........there is no right or wrong way to right a life story .........however you write it is the right way for YOU....and that's all that matters since you are the one doing the writing......I like the idea mentioned to start with a memory central to your life.....Is there a moment that stands out more than any other in your mind? that would be a good place to begin...........maybe begin with the reason you are writing this story in the first place?........there are so many options and possibilities........I'd writed down some notes about what you want to include....the focal points of the story and build from there.........often doing some brainstorming willl give the whole story a focus ...good luck with this

There's a wonderful book by Deena Metzger called Writing For Your Life, which I've found helpful in writing about my life. Also, I used to work at a store that carried a product called The Autobiography Box. I've heard that it's fun and effective. For an all-around great book on writing, it'd have to be Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg.

Best of luck!

It's fantastic that you want to write down your experience for others to share. Don't start anywhere. At least not yet. Just start writing down short stories about different things you did. The book can end up being small anecdotes put together or you can use them as a way to put some order to your story. Best of luck - Megan

I disagree with "begin at the beginning." There's no reason for all autobiographies to be chronological. After all, you are reflecting on your life, not recording it like a science experiment.

Begin with a memory that you think is central to your life. Perhaps there are a few such moments. They don't have to be happy or sad or clear or foggy or even 100% factually accurate. Ask yourself what you are compelled to write about first.

Begin at the beginning, your birth. In addition to the dry facts, tell something of your parents and others in your life. Remember it is your story, so, your opinion of any and everything, is valid - give it.
