It's an engineering standard organised by the british insitute.

You'll find materials are fully referred to as BSEN##, but companies normally drop the BS part.

BSEN just mean "British Standard European Norm". It's similar to the ISO and DIN standards across europe and ensures correct sizes, strengths etc are met.
