most travellers in medieval times were pilgrims, usually within the same country or within europe. Some made it as far as the holy lands but this was considered unsusal. For the uk, Canterbury ws a popular destination - think Canterbury Tales.

there would have been some travelling for trade purposes too, as this has been happening in europe and asia for thousands of years
