I'm not a lawyer, but from what I hear, usually the state bar association monitors lawyers, fields complaints, arranges continuing education, and so forth. There is also the American Bar Association, which accredits law schools, publishes legal educational materials, and the like. Then there's local associations, which are good for attorney networking or referrals, and arranging clinics for poor people to get cheap or free legal advice.
