Rather than give a long answer it's probably best if you check these sites all about the history of the steam train...

The steam locomotive (not 'train') was invented in 19th century England, primarily in the coalfields of the north-east. The man credited with the invention is George Stephenson, although in reality he was only one of a number of individuals working on the idea at the time. However, his locomotive, 'Rocket', won the Rainhill Trials designed to find the best type of locomotive to pull the trains on the newly constructed Liverpool and Manchester Railway. You must now do more research of your own - there is much material available to you by a simple search.

Are you sure you do not want info on a steam engine? The Watt engine was invented and has been credited as being a major factor in the industrial revolution.
