The first answerer is pretty much on the mark. I think there was something else about humans allowing alien rule, but rejecting it? Anyway, it IS good, for it's time, but you'd probably find the special effects REALLY cheesy, after what we're used to now. The main character, plaid by Michael Rennie, is also a total stiff and has less personality than the funky robot, who looks like the one in "Lost in Space"! Otherwise, it's not bad.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is about humanity's reaction to alien life. It's really more of a commentary on the human experience than a sc-fi film.
