I don't know if I missed something in the movie or if I just didn't pick up on something. What was going on with Vivi (Ashley Judd's character)? Did she just have a mental break down or was there something mentally wrong with her? Was it all related to her being a recovering alcoholic? Was it because her mother hated her? Did she recover or was she still having problems present day?

Most of her problems were her mother the loss of her true love and settling for shep.She did have a breakdown of sorts but it was because of the drugs they gave her for the alcoholism and i believe her dislike for her kids didnt help she felt trapped i think

Part of it was from issues with her mom, another was from the alcohol, also another problem was from the treatment they used to give alcoholics, which was a pill that had some pretty nasty side effects. She did have sort of a mental snap one night and hit the kids and thats when they put her in the hosptial.
