My boyfriend and I are both white...I LOVE the name Jackson Avery. (I'm 21 weeks pregnant with a boy) and I've liked that name since before I got pregnant....BUT, my boyfriend thinks the name Jackson reminds him or sounds "black"...He's undecided on the name because of that reason. We've both agreed on Avery, but I don't think it sounds "black" at all because Jack is the short form of that and that's so opposite. I really dont' care and I love the name...so, what do you think and what are some ways I can convince him this name doesn't sound "ethnic".because it doesn't and who cares!?

Who cares? Name your baby whatever you want.

I'm having the same problem with my husband and parents because I love the name Derek, and they think that name is "black."

The funny thing is that we looked it up in a baby name book and it's German. So now every time we get a snide comment, we tell them "you know it's a German name, right?" Everyone just assumed that it was "black" because of Derek Jeter.

While I must say, though, Jackson does sound "black," don't let that concern you if that's the name you want. All that matters is that you can both agree on the name, since you'll be calling it day in and day out for the next 18 years!

just talk to him tell him that while jackson is the long version jack is the short version and he can call him that if he wants to but remember as is he is your boyfriend if he has such a problem with a name then you should stick with it unless you think that he could ask you to get married but tell him that the comproise is jack you cant see another name that you like and if need be look it up on the internet for people named jackson to me it sounds southern because i remember in the movie STEEL MAGNOLIAS julia roberts marries a guy and right now i cant remember for sure but either the husband was named jackson or they named the baby boy jackson(its been awhile since i have seen the movie)and those were white people so some research to prove him wrong and best wishes to you

I had the same problem with my husband and the name Lucia. He said it sounded too Hispanic. We ended up naming her Lily. Anyway, I live in a community with very little blacks and there are several kids named Jackson. Also my husband's grandfather's name was James Jackson, everyone called him Jim or James except for his wife who called him Jack. On a personal note though, Jackson Avery does kind of sound black. But your son will make it his own personal name, and after he has it when you hear it it will only make you think of him. But if your husband is like mine he'll never really agree to it. Mine is still mad I used Joy as our second daughter's middle name, since he knew a fat lady he didn't like named Joy...but I don't care he got to choose her first name. Maybe you could compromise and use it as the middle name? Good luck, I hate deciding on names.

Look it up in baby names and show him which ethnic it is im not sure myself which it goes under but that might help you both figure out the origin of the name and then you can deside together if you still want to go with it if he is uncomfortable with the name then you can look up other names that start with J or whatever you want but you should both agree on the name since he will also have to be calling this child by that name for the rest of his life

Jackson seems to be a very popular name lately. I have googled the phrase

baby names jackson

and came up with alot of information.
Found out that Julia Roberts' boyfriend was named jackson.
I'm sure you could find a lot of popular people that are named jackson to help your boyfriend realize it's not only one race that uses it.

Jackson is a great name - but if you can't agree on it (for whatever reason) then you would do better to find a name you both like. I think you are more upset that he has a prejudice than you are that he doesn't like the name. If he had a better reason for not liking the name you wouldn't be as upset. I'd suggest you address his prejudice.

If I have a boy (I'm praying I will!), I'm going to name him Jackson, well it will sound just like Jackson but spelled differently. I love that name and it's not very common like Josh or Jason is. Best of luck!

Tell your boyfriend he's a loser because names don't sound like a race tell him to get a life. Is he in fear that people will look down on his son if he's name could be the same name of a black boy's? Am I wrong or what?

Jackson in my mind doesnt sound black, and if it does oh well. Their are black girls out there with the name of Nicole. I dont think it shold matter as long as you like the name. If he has this oppinion about the name I doubt you can change his mind. Just tell him how you feel about it. To me it sounds like he is judging it in a racist way.
