And do you know of any other books that are similar? All three books are kind of Dark and tragic but are also gripping stories of family, love and friendship.

tattycat - I ;ve has Bel Canto for a couple years but haven't read it- I've heard it was excellent, but wasn't sure about the blurb either. I like to escape politics when I read and it seemed like it might be too political. I thought that about The Kite Runner and Shadow also from the blurbs - but they were not obnoxiously political.

Now that you say it is in the realm of Kite Runnner and Secret History I'm going to make it my next book. You should try Shadow in the Wind by Carlous Ruiz Zafon. It's really good and in the same vein as the others. It does have an element of Sci-Fi in it also but it's not a Sci-fi book.

You will probably enjoy "Bel Canto" by Ann Patchett. I avoided the book, didn't think it was for me from the blurb. It turned out to be the best book I've read in 5 years. I loved Kite Runner and Secret. Have not read Shadow.
