what are the hickups?how are they formed?and whats there cure?

"Hic!" You've just hiccuped for what seems like the tenth time since you finished your big dinner. Wonder where these funny noises are coming from? The part to blame is your diaphragm (say: die-uh-fram). This is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest, and all hiccups start here.

The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.

Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes. Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or weeks, but this is very unusual, and it's usually a sign of another medical problem.

You've probably heard lots of suggestions for how to get rid of hiccups, and maybe you've even tried a few. Holding your breath and counting to 10 is one way some people can get rid of their hiccups. Other people say that drinking from the "wrong" side of a glass of water is the way to become hiccup-free.

Putting sugar under your tongue might work, too. And maybe the most famous treatment - having someone jump out and scare you when you're not expecting it - helps some people wave good-bye to their hiccups. Boo!

It looks like you have a few good answers regarding what they are.
Here is a cure that always works for me, and friends i've told this to also say it works every time

Breath in deeply pushing the lower bit of your "belly" out as you do so;
Then keeping your mouth closed hold the breath & "belly pushed out" for as long as possible (try a count to 30 or so);
Then just breath out through the nose, and "pull you belly in"
It usually works first time, but if it fails try repeating the above (i've never had to repeat this more than 3 times)

Hi,

Hiccups are an involentary spasm of the diaphragm (muscle that holds up the lungs below the ribs) They start usually like an other spasm either to increase blood flow to that area or due to tiredness sometimes due to overstretrching. There is no cure that i know of just ways to stretch out the muscle to help it settle down.

I always thought that the cause of them were from an air bubble in your diaphram. I know a great technique of getting rid of them.

Breathe in as much as you can without exhaling. Next try and swallow, then try and breath in some more air (making sure you haven't let any air out still) then swallow again. Keep repeating this process until you can no longer bear it and need to exhale.

You should find that they have gone.

This is spasms in the diaphraghm.

Try eating a teaspoon of sugarm or drinking some water.

i dont know what causes them but i get rid of mine with a mouth full of vinegar seems to work every time

they are a pain in the as*s ...i drink water to get rid of them
