I recently bought a notebook myself. A self-proclaimed computer geek friend helped me pick one out. He said stay away from Compaq and eMachines. Dell and Sony have gone downhill. Acer is ok. Best bet right now is to go with Toshiba or HP. A bit of advice for you. The new computers are coming pre-loaded with Windows Vista. If you are planning on downgrading, you're in the clear. If you're planning on keeping vista, make sure you have more than 512MB RAM or your computer will be sluggish.
