This might sound strange, but for lipstick or foundation I put it on the under side of my wrist to see what color it would look like on my face. I read somewhere that the under side of your wrist is the closest skin tone to your face. I don't wear powder but the test works for foundation for sure.

After you rub it in a bit, if the foundation color blends in nicely with the color on your wrist then it looks good on the face....this might work the same for powder.

I test it along my jaw line. If I can see the color, it's the wrong one. If it blends into my natural skin color, it's the right one.
