You could try Knoebel's Grove Amusement Park near Bloomsburg. It's an old fashioned amusement park that is very kid friendly, and they have many pavilions for family picnics.

You didn't specify whether this was for one day or overnight, so I'll take a stab at it with this:

At Hershey you have the Hershey Park Lodge and The Hershey Hotel. The Lodge would probably be a better bet- more casual and comfortable for families- the hotel is beautiful but more formal. Both have shuttles that take you over to Hershey so you don't have to hassle with a car.

My sister and brother in-law were at The Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos Region and really enjoyed it.

The place I'd really recommend is in Lancaster, about 45 minutes from Hershey- Willow Valley Resort. It's out in the farmlands and has nice rooms, great food, three pools (including a little indoor water park), tennis courts, golf, game room, duck pond, bakery and two gift shops. They also give complimentary tours of Amish Country.

I'm a Tour Director and have brought student groups here for years- they love it!

yes you're right on that. Hershey might have more stuff though. Poconos are very nice though and some parts are pretty. I would suggest renting a cabin out for a week, or however long your staying that is within 1/2 hour-hour of all your activities, that way you are close but yet have a nice spot thats not right in the city to retreat to.
have fun=]
