Many of the clothing optional beaches in the U.S. exist because there isn't a federal law barring nudity.

Does that mean that you can walk around naked on the Mall in DC? Are there other laws that apply?

OK, I KNOW that in MOST places it is illegal due to indecent exposure laws. But these are typically because of city ordinances or state laws.

There are certain places - like Baker Beach in San Francisco - where these laws can't be enforced because it is federal land.

Because the Mall is federal land, does the same apply?

Among its roles, Congress writes the "local" laws for Washington, DC, I believe.

And they're a mayor and local counsel too.

So I'd bet there's a municipal ordinance.

PS I enjoy strolling down the mall. But those benches lining the walkways are pretty uncomfortable as it is!

It depends, if you're really hot then the cops might let you get away with a warning and a couple photos. Otherwise, yeah, yer probably going to jail for indecent exposure.
