It really depends on the size of the vehicle as to why they do that. Like bus drivers and semi truck drivers do it so they can actually make the turn. The same might go for people who drive a station wagon, a big pick up truck or a larger mini van. It's so they don't run over the curb. Hopefully, though, they are being careful not to hit the people in the left lane.

some people swing left when making a right turn cause it gives them a better angle when actually making the turn. When I first started driving, i did this cause I was scared I was going to hit the curb. If a driver is any good, they will correct this problem, unfortunally, there is a lack of decent driver out there, so be careful

Bad driver beef? How about parking lot beef? Why is it that 85% of people cannot park in a straight parking space without humping the line or being way crooked, and 50% of them drive little cars? I can see it with a big truck or SUV because those things suck period for parking, but I drove a full-size pickup for 12 years and could park it perfectly straight...and it didn't have power steering!!

They have spent the day driving an 18 wheeler, and forget they are in the Honda now.
My beef? The guy that has to pass me, and then stops to turn left on a two lane road.

Ok, I want you do to a little field survey now. For the next week every time you see some one make that wide turn...see what kind of car or truck it is.
Sometimes it is the size of the vehicle that dictates a wide left swing.
And sometimes people are avoiding clipping the curb with their tire to avoid damage.
and lastly some folks do drive badly...but we all drive badly even us that believe we drive perfect!

Because they just witnessed you running over the curb for the 100th time. They want to exercise some caution after following you as you simultaneously utilize make-up, cell phone, and french fries.
You are a bad driver and need to get a bicycle.

Being in the car with my people like my husband who only use the mirrors to change lanes, rather than actually turning their heads to see if there's someone in the blind spot. I can't tell you how many accidents we've barely avoided because of that.

Speaking personally, i'd only ever do it if it's particularly tight turn and I needed to get the angle.
I could say it's feinting (or swedish flick in ye olde rally terms) but you shouldnt really be doing that on the road!
