Because most of them are professional failures in life and can do nothing else. Same has happen to me. I'm looking for a ___? First response – we don't carry it. Second response – never heard of it. Third response – we're all out. Forth response – you need a sink, check seasonal items. Fifth response – our store (35 miles away) has 85 of them in stock. Sixth response – we only sell what they ship to us.
When I get the run around, and finally get an answer, I go back to idiot #1 and tell him where (isle # and shelf location) to find the item. I get the deer-in-the-headlight glare, and walk away. Then, tear the manager a new one. I have declined a lot of freebees just to leave the store as quick as possible.

Happens to me all the time. The guy doesn't even know what a compression fitting is, and he is working the plumbing department! I go to a real hardware store a lot now days. The people there actually know there product, it is organized and it doesn't take 5 trips because they didn't have something. The cost difference is very minimal and my time is worth more than the difference.

Ive worked for both Home Depot and Lowes. The answer is simple, there are between 32,000 and 40,000 differant items in the standard home depot and lowes, most ppl are not going to be able to remember every single one of those items locations, i worked for home depot for 6 years, i knew where almost every thing was, but i had to ask other ppl for things also, just too many items to know everything. It doesnt help that both retailers are no longer hireing knowledgeable ppl, let alone paying enough for an associate to even care what you need. If you want Walmart prices, you are going to get Walmart knowledge.

I used to work for HD so I can answer this easily. The people who KNOW the technical stuff about your problem, are called TRADESMEN, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc. They make real money at real jobs.
If you want to know where your gizmo is in my store, that’s called retail. We don’t get trained on the 65,000 gizmos in our store. NO. We don't know what you mean. No we don't know what size the thingy under the hickey is, no matter HOW poorly you describe it to us.
95% of all people coming into a DIY store should NEVER EVER blow their own noses, let alone try to do skilled trade work themselves. Because they don't know the first flying fvck about what they are doing, what they need, or how to do it, and that what they really need to fix isn't what they are currently doing.
As a retail slave, at any given moment I am chasing down answers for 15 other customers before you got there. I'm lucky if I make $6.00 an hour to kiss yours and every one else’s @ss who don't know a flying fvck what they are doing, so MOST likely I will tell one of the following every time:
1) we don't carry it.
2) we are out of stock
3) the store 15 miles away DOES have it, (but I DIDN'T check deliberately). Have a nice drive douche bag
4) tell you the wrong department, or the wrong direction just to catch my own breath.
Oh but heh, since you already know where it is, and you know what you are doing, why not fill out an application and give me some help besides teenagers with attitude, or housewives with fancy fingernails who cant get dirty?

They hire kids that don't know "JACK" about construction or it's material, and they don't know where anything is unless it's in their Dept. and not even then sometimes. That's why if I have to go to a hardware store I will go to ACE. You pay a little bit more, but well worth the time and knowledge, from the people who work there......OH..... In places like home depot you can be in lines for a vary long time.......Time is money..........
Did you hear about the one about HOME DEPOT and their sub contractors........???????????
The sub contractors do crappy work and when you complain to home depot they tell you to go after the sub contractor, they have nothing to do with it......But yet they sub contract the work out, but have nothing to do with it......Umm.......Is there something wrong with this picture...........?????????

Ugh ~ that drives me nuts also. I was planning on purchasing carpeting from a home improvement center, and ended up walking out because I waited for 1/2 hour, and no one came to help me.

Retail home improvement centers will hire anyone, knowledge or not. These employees don't care. Just like walmart. You think their employees give a crap? No, they are there to collect a paycheck...as little as it may be.
