Read the Iliad & the Odyssey, by Homer. Also The Voyage of Argo, by Appolonius of Rhodes. These are available from Penguin Classics.
There are also two great works on the life of Theseus, entitled "The King Must Die," & "The Bull From the Sea," by Mary Renault, who takes the myth, & presents it in a more historical, & realistic setting.
For a more concise but full coverage of this subject, also try "The Greek Myths" vols. 1 & 2, by Robert Graves.

if you really wish to learn about mythology, and other religious doctrines you should acquire three books. The Golden Bough by Fraser, Uriel's Machine by Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas, Oxford's guide to ancient mythology. Also remember, that what we today call mythology is a belief in Gods, no different from current religions, which in a couple of millenia will be their ancient mythos to whatever they believe in the future. There is still no proof of Zeus or Pan or Odin, all names given to the most important diety in those ancient times, as there is no proof of the current Judiac-Christian-Islamic God or for that matter any of the Hindu gods. In fact the only religious figure we are certain has once placed foot upon the earth is Budha, and nobody worships him, they just follow his teachings. Good luck in your learning.

I have three encyclopedia-size world mythology books that have and absolutely love. They have loads of information on all types of mythological beings, especially Greek. I also have Edith Hamilton's Mythology book. All of these are great. Keep an eye out at Borders and Barnes & Noble, they have those encyclopedia-size books on sale every once in a while. I purchased all of mine on sale.

yes, Hamilton's is the best, but there are lots available. you need to ask at your library. look in amazon.com for possible titles. if they don't have a book you want, ask about interlibrary loan. they can borrow books from all over. maybe from my library!
