Bottom line is, you need to stop thinking about adding more fish and focus on getting a larger tank. Goldfish produce huge quantities of waste which puts a lot of ammonia in the water, which, if you don't have a large enough environment and know how to filter, clean and test it properly, can become a toxic, deadly place for your fish. You don't say what size tank you have and whether you have fancies or slim-bodied goldfish, but as most people get the slim-bodied, I'm going to guess that's what they are which makes things worse. Slim-bodied goldfish need a minimum of 20 gallons of water per fish. So, for your three goldfish, you need a minimum of a 60 gallon tank and when they get to be 4 inches and bigger, they are going to need a tank twice as big. In the event you have fancies, they still, will need a 60 gallon tank as their final size because they each can reach a size of 6-8 inches full grown. Doing this will make your little dudes happy and healthy and will make you happy too!

Chances are your tank is too small for anything else. Goldfish need a lot of room. They produce a lot of waste which is harmful for so if they don't have the room they need then your ammonia levels will be too high. This will make your goldies sick and kill anything you try to put with them.

Goldfish are a coldwater fish. Most of the other fish in the store are tropical- guppies, platies, tetras... These fish can not be kept together. FIsh are cold blooded the temp. of the water affects them more that it would us. You need to respect the environments they need or your fish will keep dieing.

ALgae eaters CAN NOT be kept with goldies. They will eat the slime coat off your fish at night making them more susceptible to disease. They also eat the algae in the tank that your goldies need to stay regular.

If you have a large enough tank- 40 gallons at the very least (60 would be better) you could add a pair of dojo loaches. These are really fun little coldwater fish. If you just get one they will flirt with your goldies relentlessly.

Goldfish get to be very large. There is no such thing as a small goldfish just an unhealthy or juvenial one. My babies are about 9 inches, my male dojo is about 8 inches my female is younger she is only 4 or so. They have a 75 gallon to themselves.

What I would suggest to add more intrest to your tank is to invest in some beautiful decortions. They have great silk plants and treated driftwood that make a tank beautiful. CHeck out an aqua-scaping site for some inspiration.

1. how large is your tank?
2. what kind of goldfish? common (long bodied) or fancy (head growths, short bodies)? these two shouldn't be mixed. commons bully fancies and cause swimbladder damage, the commons will also outcompete a fancy to dinner.

there's very few things that can thrive with goldfish in a tank environment, unless it's a huge tank. and once the goldfish hits 8"-10", anything small enough to fit in it's mouth will become goldfish food, this rules out small fish.

you cannot mix tropical fish with goldfish. tropical fish need warmer water, and would die from the toxins (ammonia) from the goldfish's constant pooping. so this rules out things like neon tetras, bettas and guppies.

the only sub-tropical fish that can survive in cooler temperatures are weather/dojo loaches, white cloud mountain minnows and some species of corys can cope too. HOWEVER, the loaches and corys wouldn't last long unless it was a big tank as they'd succumb to the ammonia from goldfish poo. and if you have common goldfish, the minnows would become a light afternoon snack.

snails can work, giant trapdoor snail for example, but they poop almost as much as goldfish do so the amount of poopy and ammonia in the tank would go up. especially seeing as a lot of snails are real pros when it comes to reproducing!

goldfish are best in species only tanks only to be honest.

Single tailed goldfish can be mixed with some species of coldwater fish either in an aquarium or in a pond. The fish should be of a similar size and peaceful, potentially large and predatory species like channel catfish should be avoided whatever their size.
Good tank mates are fish like -

Rudd.

Tench - silver, green and golden forms are all available.

Minnows, cool water is essential.

Orfe. - different colour forms available.

Weather Loach.

Stone Loach

Gastromyzon and Pseudogastromyzon sp (hill stream loaches or cold water Plecs)

Other goldfish, Shubunkins and Comets.

The choice of tank-mate for these fish is more restrictive because they are very slow awkward swimmers. Their deportment is similar to a fish which is struggling and this brings out the worst in other fish. They are quite defenceless and easily bullied, their fins are long and flowing in most cases and don't heal quite as easily as "normal" fish, and they are unable to compete strongly for food.
Because of all this they are best kept with their own kind or very similar fish only.

First tell us what size your tank is, if it is smaller then 60 gallons then it is too small for anything else.

Neon tetras would probably be fine with them. Glow light or head light tail light tetras would match your gold fish. Something small. Low mantenence and something that can stand lower temperatures. Small tetras would be your best bet.
