Once again, people give answers without any backround or knowledge. How do people think doctors used to listen to babies heartbeats before the invention of doppler? Yes, it is possible to hear a fetal heartbeat using a stethoscope, although a fetoscope (fetal stethoscope) would be better.
Listening to the Fetal Heart
Starting at around 20 weeks, the fetal heartbeat can usually be heard without Doppler amplification (ultrasound). At this point a special stethoscope called a fetoscope can be used. The heartbeat is best heard over the baby's back, which often seems firm when you feel around the uterus. It may be difficult to hear the fetal heart by stethoscope if the mother is overweight or if the placenta is on the front wall of the uterus. It gets easier to hear later on in the pregnancy, so don't get discouraged! Always remember that every pregnancy is unique, and mothers should always consult their obstetrician with any questions. These fetal stethoscopes are intended for use by professionals.

it depends on how far a long you are. The stethescope won't pick it up as soon as the doppler. I "think" you have to be pretty far along for that to work. The heartbeat will be extremely fast when you do pick it up. You can get a BeBe sounds at walmart or anywhere like that. You can listen yourself and some even record it. Usually those aren't very effective until about 20 weeks or so. But you will be surprised some of the crazy stuff you hear in there. Mine always picked up hickups, lol.

You should be able to but it doesn't quit sound like your own heartbeat being the baby is in the womb surrounded by fluid. It is a swooshing sound but of course with the repetition pater like a heartbeat. I always found they sound real fast. Kind of like if you took a cord and swung it around to where it make that sound like on Crocodile Dundee. Do you remember that, on the movie, where he calls the Aborigines with the phone cord. When I would hear the heartbeat of my kids it reminded me of that. I know it is a strange reference, but it is a good description of the sound.

There are fairly in-expensive listening devices available, but you have to be pretty far along before you can actually hear the heartbeat. Check out this web site http://bebesounds.com/default.asp
You can also rent the expensive doppler listening devices like the use at the doctors office. There are a ton a places online that rent them. Just search under doppler fetal rentals.

Actually, it is very possible to hear an unborn baby's heartbeat with a stethoscope--it just all depends on how far along in the pregnancy you are.

my friends mother, who was an OB nurse for many years, listened that way. She's going to give me her stethoscope. the only thing is, there is different things in the womb, the placenta will be heard because of the blood flow. You're going to have to wait until your past like 20 weeks or so to really hear the heart beat & be quiet & carefully listen & distinguish the differences. I guess that's the hard part.

I'm 24 weeks and can't hear my baby with the stethoscope at all. I can't find the heartbeat with it. I rented a doppler and can hear it just fine with that though.

Yes you can, but only after the 7month and beyond. Before that you can only hear the babys movements. If you are earlier then 7months you can go to any baby store or store with a mom to be/baby section(Babies R Us, MotherHood Maternity, Wal-Mart, Target, ect) and buy Bebe Sounds Gidt set(http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2507934&cp=2255982.2534415&parentPage=family).
Congradulations on the baby!

No...what you are hearing is your own heartbeat. You can howvever rent or buy a doppler, but I would caution against this as the heartbeat can be hard to find and cause needless worry!
