As a general recommendation, I say the first time you go overseas you should visit a country that speaks the same language. That way you can learn about things like how to deal with Customs and visas and hotels and taxis and other stuff in your native language, and you can get an experience that is a bit different from what you are used to without the headache of dealing with the language barrier.

My second piece of advice is that, assuming this is your 'wild fantasy' type wish, visit someplace that you will not have a chance to visit later in life. For example, let's say you are now single with some time on your hands and can live out of a backpack without much problem. Now is the time to go to Hong Kong, or the Phillipines, or South Africa--someplace you are not very likely to visit again. When you are married, or with kids, or used to nice hotels, then you can goto Italy and England and France. But for now, really go out on an adventure.

I visited Italy over my winter break a few years ago. It was the best experience I ever had, and I would totally recommend it to anyone. One thing to consider is the time of when you want to go - it was cold and rainy when I went to Italy, but my umbrella kept any pickpockets at a distance!
Also, you might want to consider a tour if you are travelling with a large group. I went with my family, and if we didn't have a tour guide to keep us in order, we would have wasted half the time that we were there just deciding what to do or even getting ready to go!
I visited the northern half of Italy, and I would say that my favorite cities were Florence and Bologna. However, if you go, make sure you set a day aside to seeing the Sistine Chapel ceiling - truly breathtaking!

I've been in Italy, but not for long. We drove through part of it and stopped for lunch there on a trip around France. What I saw of it was gorgeous, but we were in the mountains, not any city.

If I could go anywhere I would definitely go back to Chamonix, France. It's in the Alps and simply breathtaking. Though I would also love to go to England, Ireland, Russia, Various places in Africa, and - I guess I just want to see the world, as much as I can.

I would have to say Italy of Japan. They both have such a rich, romantic culture. Italy seems so beautiful with all of it's art and historical sites, and I'm totally fascinated by the Japanese culture all together. Hopefully I'll get to go to one or both places in the future. I've always dreamed of a honeymoon or romantic getaway to either.

I've been to both Italy and England, and both are nice.

I'm dying for something exotic, such as Israel, India or Thailand. I need a change of pace.
