No! Never! Newborns do not need water like we do. Too much water in their system with not enough nutrients & they can develop low salt levels and even seizures due to the electrolyte imbalance. They should be given formula or breast milk only.

No... at this age babys need to be just taking in breastmilk or a properly mixed formula. Once upon a time our mothers gave babies water, and I honestly do not know why. If you think of it this way... mother nature would not allow your baby (if she were a wild animal) to crawl down to the side of the river for a drink. You would only be carrying her around and breastfeeding... once a baby is old enough to be able to move on his/her own, then she may have some water... yeah... generally not until closer to 6-9 months really. The more you can think of yourself and your baby as if you were natural animals and not just people, the easier it will be to idealize what can/cannot be introduced. Sound crazy? Maybe, but it's about nature and instinct. A very good reason NOT to give your baby water (or a weak dilution of formula) is because of the harm of water in such a small little person. A baby can actually be "poisoned" by too much water in her system. Check it out!

Actually, a little water is okay. Especially if your baby is constipated. I wouldn't give too much, but my baby is 5 weeks and I give him water everyday (a little) because I can't breastfeed and formula makes him constipated, so the water helps with that.

It's best not to. Babies need their nutrition right now. They should only be drinking breastmilk or formula. Water is empty calories, which they don't need. They need to be putting on weight right now and because they are growing so much, their bodies require the calories. As far as hydration, breastmilk and formula will hydrate their bodies sufficiently.

No, babies do not need water, it's just empty calories and will take away from their milk/formula intake. Babies don't need water until a sippy cup is introduced around 6 or 7 months.

Make sure that it is freshly boiled when you put it in the baby's bottle. Don't use water that has been boiled and reboiled.
Working within these parameters, yes, you can give your baby water, but don't offer so much that s/he fills up on water, they still need lots and lots of breast milk!
I know that it's not advisable to give water, but I was told to because of the white coating on my daughters tongue, and it was a really hot summer when I had her...I was perfectly willing to offer more milk, but everyone I knew was on at me to give water as well.
Fortunately, my daughter refused it!
