I would like to know if its possible to split one main Ethernet connection from the modem using a t-joint connector to split it up for two computers, will this work or will there be port conflicts/ip address conflicts? Thanks!

There are cat 5 splitters, but they only split the signal over the length of the cat5 cable, not at the endpoints. Here is a link to how it works

You will need to use a hub or switch. An ethernet connection cannot be split in the same way that you would split a video or audio signal.

And if coming from a cable or dsl modem, you will need a router. Or you can get a router that acts as a wired / wireless switch also. The router will assign private IP addresses to each device via DHCP.

to connect 2 computers without hub or router you need whats called a crossover cable, this is a cable that switchs a pair of wires on one end so that recieve matchs transmit on the other end.
