Depends on what you consider great. But the state offers a lot of variety that many others can't. Texas has plains, desert, mountains, valleys, and even a beach. Nice warm weather. We still get winter weather, but because we don't have the equipment to deal with it (since it doesn't happen enough to justify buying snow plows & such), most things shut down. Where as up north, people still have to shovel themselves out and go to work.
Texas has no state income tax.... one of the few states that doesn't. Texas also has a better cost of living than a lot of states. You get more home for your money here.
And of course - the food is excellent! Tex-Mex. BBQ. "Home cooking". Fried foods. But, still have the variety of other culture foods, especially in the larger metropolitan areas (DFW, Houston, Austin, etc).
Problem is, people think all Texans wear big hats, drive trucks and own horses and ranches. Not true. That would be as narrow minded as saying all Californians are tanned, blonde and stupid. All New Yorkers are named Vinnie and drive taxi cabs. Etc. Texas has a pretty good variety.
And it is obviously good to a lot of people, because a LOT of people from all over the US have been moving to Texas lately. Seems like more people living here are not originally from Texas, where as, about 15+ years ago, most people were originally from here.

Texas is a great state it has a little of everything. I think that Texas is a little to sterotyped and that people should visit the state before they make a rude comment.

I'm originally from the North (The Tri-State Area) and I lived in Texas (Austin) just recently for 7 years. Now I don't want to seem hurtful but the answer to your question, in my personal opinion HELL NO Texas is not a great state! It's another country in itself! You all walk to the same beat of the music. You've got a jalapeno in every thing that you eat! You seem to be somewhat miserable because the White people are unhappy with the Mexicans and the Black people are unhappy about the fact that black men date white women. And while all this is going on, it's not even phasing the White man. I personally witnessed that myself! I told the black women out there, don't get mad, get even. But they wouldn't listen to me a girl from the North. So let their @sses suffer! Hell I've swirled up here in the North plenty of times! It's not a big deal! And it doesn't hurt that White men from the North love Black women anyway! Now these are just experiences that I had while living there. Plus I got bored with the weather. Hot and cool. I need my 4 seasons! At least you can predict what to wear outside. Hell you could have on a pair of shorts and sandles in Austin, TX and all of sudden you've got a thunderstorm dousing your @ss before you can get to your car. And then you still can't see on the roads! Also the Wal-Mart shopping was the hightlight of your day! I can't deal! I need boutiques and major malls. I know that Texas has them but the clothing is not quite the same as it is in the North. I realize that you all have to dress for the temperature out there just like we have to dress according to the weather here for the 4 seasons. Also........I have never heard of one city hating the other but all of you live in the same state! Austin people doesn't like Houston, Houston doesn't like Dallas, Dallas doesn't like Austin! I have never heard of anything like that before and when I was living there it was blowing my mind! So I've been back to my home state for the last year in a half and when I saw the sign that read that I was back home, I pulled over got out of the truck and kissed the ground! My daughter and myself! We even went into the lobby of a hotel restaurant and danced a jig we were so happy to be back North where there is no slavery minded people around us! And I'm not going to even get into the lethal injection (death penalties) that you all love so much! That's just another icing on the cake! You go to church on Sunday laughing a grinning (and to me that seems all a facade) and then on Wednesday you the State of Texas is killing someone. This subject came up on a job I was working on down there and do you know that one of those ignorant @sses had the nerve to say in his country twanged language "Well at least we not killin nobody on Sunday!" I was floored from disgust! So honey if you love Texas, I'm happy for you! But please don't get it twisted, to live in Texas is not for everyone!

Not if you're innocent and on Death row.
I suppose its an ideal state if you happen to be
racist, hate homosexuals etc.
Most of my experience with Texas has been,
as you say, great, but it has its low points too.
