Emptying / irritating the bowel may well help to get things moving if your bowels have something in them to start with, but I would be very wary of using constipation remedies or castor oil or anything like that since you could induce raging diarrhoea which may do nothing other than completely exhaust you and leave you in no fit state to go through labour. If you are less than your due date, just be patient. Once you have reached your due date, then go to you antenatal department and ask for a cervical sweep. Community midwives won't do it unless you are booked as a home birth) as there is a small risk of rupturing the waters (no problem if you are in the hospital anyway). You may have to have more than one sweep but it is by far the most effective natural way to induce labour and is highly rated as a way to avoid classic 'inductions'. Of course a night of hot curry and hot s*x may or may not work, but what the heck, you can have fun trying ;-)

I have not heard of senokot inducing.. Who and how many people told you these tablets would work? I have to admit i suffer from constipation and have used senokot in the past (b4 i was pregnant) as they are natural.. I am 39 weeks and 3 days pregnant and the thought had past my mind because of all the talk about castor oil helping to bring on labour but i am too scared to try and would prefer to just wait things out.... As this natural laxative had passed my mind without it actually being mentioned i would be interested to know more about it.. Good luck if you do try..
P.s. I have tried all the safer things that would only work if your body is ready like, Pineapple (fresh), Hot curries, lots of walking, Raspberry leaf tea, and tablets.. I also have baths with clary sage and lavender oil -all this does is relax me, which is nice though.. oh yeah and sex, even ingesting semen (gross, i know, sorry!) as i heard that helps even more.. But my baby is staying put.. Nothing has worked for me.. Xx

Not true... In fact taking a laxative when there is no real need is hard on your body. You may do damage instead of any good. The best way to get labor going is sex. Lots of physical movement (walking is good) and sex. It gets all the muscles in that region moving and primed. Not to be too graphic, but you climaxing actually is extremely helpful to moving it along. Other than that, having the Dr. do a widening proceedure is about the only things that will work. Oh and DO NOT use Castor oil!!!! That could kill the baby.

Not a good idea!!! One it can pass to the baby and cause a lot of problems and two You are going to get contractions but not the sort you are looking for! If it did start the labour (which it often doesn't) you don't want to be sat over a toilet then anyway. Let nature take its course, when the baby IS ready you'll have enough to do without worrying about diarrhoea!

I don't think any of those remedies work, at least they did not with me. I read stuff about laxatives and castor oil, but I never tried any of that because I did not want to spend the day in the bathroom...yuck. I read that sex may induce labour and my doctor even suggested that to me. Apperently there is a chemical in the sperm that can induce labour, your husband might like hearing this but it did not work for us either. I think the baby just decides when he/she is ready to come! Good luck! Man I don't miss being 9 months pregnant! LOL

I would be careful with taking senokot tablets, they are really only for people who are constipated.
My labour was brought on by a beef curry.

Would not recommend any laxatives, unless you want to spend forever in the bathroom. In order to get labor going you need to get the cervix thinned and oxytocin going. The testosterone in sperm will help with both and nipple stimulation will help with oxytocin production. Nipple stimulation takes time and for someone with tender breasts it can be painful.

From Birthing Naturally: http://www.birthingnaturally.net/cn/technique/nipple.html

To stimulate the release of oxytocin, you must mimic the suckling of a baby. When a baby suckles, he does not grab just the nipple, but actually massages the areola (dark circle around the nipple).

The areola can be orally massaged by the mother's partner or by a baby who has been "borrowed" for this purpose (babies under 6 weeks will tend to suckle any woman).

The mother may prefer to massage her own areola. To do this she can rub the areola in a gentle rolling way with her palm or fingers. This can be done through thin clothing.

NOTE: Nipple stimulation can have very strong effects, similar to Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin). For this reason various experts have given recommendations on its use. Here are some recommendations I have seen at various sources:

- Only massage one breast at a time
- Only massage a nipple for 5 minutes, wait up to 15 minutes to see what happens before continuing with the massage.
- Do not stimulate the breast during a contraction.
- Do not use nipple stimulation after the contractions are 3 minutes apart or 1 minute long.

Take care - you'll do great!

i would encourage you not to take anything for constipation to bring on labor. Yes in some OTC drugs there are ingredients that cause the bowels to spasm like cascara bark.

If you can talk with someone about natural ways of going into labor that would be better.

Hmm that's a new one on me. This is the same theory as the castor oil effect, which basically brings on diahorea and the contractions from that happening brings on your labour contractions (in theory, didn't work for me tho!) by the sound of it tho!

I've never heard this before it could have something to do with the natural ingredients as i know you cannot take some herbal medicines during pregnancy as it can bring on labour.
