When I move things to trash (and empty the trash) it deletes, but the amount of free spaces stays the same. I cant seem to free up space by deleting files.

Try
Finder -> Secure Empty Trash

You could also try erasing the free space on your drive:
Open Disk Utility, located in /Applications/Utilities. Click on your hard drive name from the list on the left. Not the master device, but the one with your hard drive's name (default - Macintosh HD). Click the Erase tab. There should be a button that says "Erase Free Space..." Click that. Then select an option (default - Zero Out Deleted Files). The 7-Pass and 35-Pass options will take much longer and generally are not necessary unless you work for the government and want to make sure that those files are basically irretrievable.

I think that you want to do Apple -> Secure Empty Trash. After making sure your trash has been emptied, restart the computer. This confirms the deleted trash, and gives you more memory space availible.

Did you then empty the trash? That needs to be done.

To a clean install by reformatting your entire hard drive.
Go to your "Disk Utility" and follow the prompt to "Erase" or "Restore".

Make sure you have the original OS disk so you can rebuild your entire drive.
