they used a hot water bottle on their abdomens to deal with the pain or took whatever pain reliever was available (aspirin's been around for quite some time). as far as tampons & pads...well, back in the day -- even when my mom was a kid -- they tied a string around their waists & looped an actual cotton rag up & under their privates to catch the blood. It was a very messy solution, espcially overnight. Afterwards, gals had to hand-wash their soiled 'rags' & hang them to dry for reuse! thank goodness for tampons! BTW that's where the saying 'on the rag' comes from.

long time ago women would use towels as pads and they would have to wash them when they would change and as for midol they would take a warm towel and place it in their abdomen. the heat from the towel would relax any pain that they were feeling.

I saw on the history channel once that when Cherokee women would get "the curse" they would be sent into the woods for a week.

I dunno about you, but the thought of being alone in the woods surrounded by scary animals dripping blood down my legs does not appeal to me at all...
